Picture of the Day : Lake Okanagan Overlook

Extremely wide angle panorama image showing Lake Okanagan and more of the Okanagan Valley overlooking Kelowna, by Chris Gardiner Photography
Lake Okanagan
Today's picture of the day comes to you from earlier in November, from an elevated viewpoint overlooking Kelowna and a lot of the Okanagan. Though the weather wasn't too picturesque, it wasn't very cold either, so it was a great night to be out photographing the city in the evening.

Picture of the Day : The Winter Sunset

A Winter Sunset from Kelowna, BC Canada from the shore of Lake Okanagan by Chris Gardiner Photography www.cgardiner.ca
Scenic Sunset on Lake Okanagan
The anatomy of the winter sunset is different from the average Kelowna summer sunset for a few reasons.  None of this is proven, or science based, simply observational through experience.  I actually love the winter sunset way more than the summer sunset here, aside from the difficult to deal with temperatures, the winter sunset is more reliable.

A Shoot With an Old Friend

Portrait photoshoot in scenic environmental location of Bronte, Oakville, Ontario, by professional photographer Chris Gardiner www.cgardiner.ca
During my recent fall trip to Ontario, I had the chance to get together with an old friend for a photoshoot.  Looking back, she was one of the first 'models' to stand in my studio going back to my days in Lake Louise staff accommodations. For this session after some years have passed, we got a little more "age appropriate" ;)

Read on for some more great colorful photos and information on what I used to capture them.

Photos Up High

Airplane photography by Chris Gardiner www.cgardiner.ca
The Sun Sets Below Us
Get the window seat on the airplane! It used to be something I did when I was a kid, but now there is a different motif.  There is such a variety of 'skyscapes' available that it's hard to not want the window seat every time I fly.  Without even thinking about it anymore, I often sit on the south facing side of the airplane, especially if I am in the air during the magic hours which are notably longer when your moving 500mph in a westerly direction.

Picture of the Day : Tonemap Your Way Out of the Forest

A tone mapped forest scene used to demonstrate the effect of tone mapping software by Chris Gardiner Photography www.cgardiner.ca
Tonemapped Forest Scene
Tone mapping is an acquired taste. I often don't love the finished product it will deliver, but every now and then it does a better job than any other method you have used to transcribe the scene before you.

It helped for this forest scene because the early afternoon sun was burning onto the ground while my shadow areas lacked any detail whatsoever.

False Colorization

An example of the black and white image of the three stooges and the falsely coloured version produced by chris gardiner photography www.cgardiner.ca
False Colorization of the Three Stooges by Chris Gardiner

I had a post from a few years ago on false colorization. It has since been deleted during my big update of correcting the broken image links on my blog, but this is the new version.   There was a viral post circulating its way around social media that showed some skillful colorization of old photos, and it got me thinking about the project again.
Something I seldom get requests for, but there seems to be a wealth of similar work available these days.  I took two hours from a rainy afternoon indoors to put this one together to advertise what I can do.

How about a few tips for doing this yourself?

Picture of the Day : J+A Environmental Portraits

environmental portraiture work by Chris Gardiner Photography in Kelowna, BC, Canada www.cgardiner.ca
J&A Portrait session outdoor example this fall.

Fall is one of my favourite times for couple's portraits outdoors. This is a quick look at some portraits I made for Justin and Annika in late November this year.

The landscape often get's it's last burst of colour at this time of year, and you can really luck out with some great weather, and temperatures that leave the wardrobe options wide open. All in all, it makes for some very relaxed and comfortable looking portraits that are well suited to couples.

Read on for a few more of my favourites from this session.

Picture of the Day : Photographing my Neighbours

A bald eagle in a tree captured by Chris Gardiner Photography www.cgardiner.ca
A bald eagle close to it's home, conveniently close to my home

Creeping. Not what this post is about. Haha - sorry if that let's you down, but I have a different type of new neighbour.

As you may have read in an older post with a summer recap - the office of Chris Gardiner Photography has moved - with it - I've got new neighbours.  A pair of bald eagles that have a nest less than a block from where I live. With that kind of guarantee of wildlife sighting, I've thought about investing in my 500mm lens finally.

There's a few more after the link,

Picture of the Day : Like Glass

A lone kayaker on the glassy reflections of Lake Okanagan in the late fall, by Chris Gardiner Photography www.cgardiner.ca
A Lone Kayaker on Lake Okanagan by Chris Gardiner Photography

Thanks for checking out today's picture of the day. This one comes to you from just a week or so ago when it hardly looked like winter around here, because you can't feel the temperature outside through a photo.

I happened to be near the beach shooting an assignment when I saw the lone kayaker out on the water. With the lake as still as it was, and the lighting we had, it was too good to pass up - so I ran over and snapped the photo above and a few more you'll see below.

Picture of the Day : Days on the Mountain

November 28, 2013 at Big White Ski Resort by Chris Gardiner Photography www.cgardiner.ca
Panorama at Big White Ski Resort

There has never been a day I spent on the mountain, that I felt like was wasted.  Especially when you get to bring back clear images that will help you remember the adventure in the years to come.  Photographing my days on Lake Louise Ski Hill before I even had a proper DSLR was one of the first things that grew my love for photography.

Enjoy the one above and many more below from this year, or the end of last.

How To: Shoot A Night Time Panorama

How to photograph a night time panorama with your camera by Chris Gardiner Photography www.cgardiner.ca Kelowna, BC, Canada November 2013
A night time panorama from November 25 2013 by Chris Gardiner
Capturing a panorama can seem hard enough, and then add the variables included with night photography and it can become an even greater challenge… perfect! Challenges are what keep us entertained with what we do.
So a few days ago I went down to the beach to capture a few photos after the sun had set, and this was the first photo I captured, well it's a panorama, so it's the first seven. Here's how I made it;

Picture of the Day : Winter State of Mind

A setting sun on a winter scenic with fresh powder snow covering the area, by Chris Gardiner Photography www.cgardiner.ca at Big White Ski Resort, Okanagan
Pristine Fresh Snowfall
This is a scenic I captured from a day of snowshoeing around Big White's Nordic Trails. It was so early in the season we were breaking trail everywhere we went, which was kinda nice to know we wouldn't run into anyone either.  Breaking trail also afforded me some views of nice wide pathway's through the trees with completely untouched beds of snow like the one above.  Read on to see how I made this photo.

Workflow Like A Pro : Flagging

Great Blue Heron in the wild, photographed by Chris Gardiner wildlife photographer in Kelowna, BC.
It's a crucial step to editing that is often taken for granted. Flagging your photos.  It can mean the difference between making good use of your time, and wasting time spinning your wheels.  It's one of those things that can help you with something trivial, like picking the best of a bunch of heron photos, or something serious like getting through editing 1500 wedding photos before the one you are shooting next weekend.
So read on for some of the insight to my workflow;

Picture of the Day : A Glimpse of Autumn

Orchard in Autumn wide angle view by Chris Gardiner Photography www.cgardiner.ca
Orchard in Autumn by Chris Gardiner Photography
A look back at Autumn in the Okanagan. This is a view of an Orchard down the road from where I live and it's perfect rows, with nice green grass contrasted by the tree's yellow leaves really grabbed me as I drove by. We pulled over right away, ran back to snap this one an a couple other quickies, and definitely happy I did because it looks great as a long poster print and on canvas!

Picture of the Day : Ray of Light

Scenic Crepuscular rays of light poke through the clouds on the Mountains of Okanagan Valley viewed from Kelowna by Chris Gardiner Photography www.cgardiner.ca
Mountain Weather in Action
This picture of the day is from earlier this month on a warmer afternoon by the water. The clouds were moving fast, and in the distance, the sun was shooting its rays down towards the Peachland area. The layering and gradation of the mountains behind were what caught me with the golden mist above.
This one even came from the Canon G15 as I didn't even have my good cameras on me - I was just enjoying a little walk with Steph.

You may have seen this one before with a little modification over on my facebook page. I am actively avoiding posting pictures on facebook now, hence the picture of the day section here.  But in the case of cover photos, I decided to make them an opportunity for a little photoshop action. See what I mean after the link.

Compositing Again

Before and After images showing a plain Okanagan Sunrise and an improved photoshop version with a better sky dropped into it.
The Original (L) and Composited version (R)
Photoshopping pictures can be tones of fun, and it can take many different forms, from "liquifying" your portraits, dodging and burning, to my favorite - compositing.

Compositing landscapes is something I've touched on before. Just wanted to share a quick look into a transformation process of how one of these happens, filters and layers I use and why it may help you.

Three Ways to Cope with Focus Challenges Using Your SLR

Bald eagle is seen in a tree bare of leaves, a very challenging scene for your camera's autofocus to deal with, by Chris Gardiner Photography in Kelowna, BC, Canada www.cgardiner.ca
A challenging scene for your autofocus

People ask me a lot of questions about photography, and one thing that comes up time and time again is focal issues. I don't talk about it because it's something you kind of start to take for granted once you acquire quality lenses and a skillset to back it.
I'll demonstrate with this scene with a challenging focus, and some tips on other ways to achieve focus in your shot.

Useful Software : StarStax

Stars in the night sky above Lake Okanagan in a long exposure by Chris Gardiner Photography www.cgardiner.ca, created in CometMode with StarStax Software on a Mac
Comet Mode in StarStax!
If you use a mac, you can understand the plight in finding the software commonly recommended for a particular job or task, and it's always Windows based.  StarStax is an excellent program to use for the Mac system that will fire together your big star trail compilations with ease.

If you are someone who was doing them manually in photoshop, maybe opening only 20 images at a time to keep your system from crashing - this program will definitely help you out.  One of those 'set it and forget it' kinda programs the way PhotoMatix does your HDR if you swing that way. haha.

Picture of the Day : Big White Panorama

We have gotten ski season underway here in the Okanagan and much of British Columbia. This is a panorama stitched together exactly where I shot it from on my iPhone.

That was the view near the end of the day once after the morning fog cleared.  I am considering integrating this image into my out of office email reply... Haha, just kidding, I have 3G on the mountain, so it's like I'm never out of the office.

GoPro Hero 3 : Test Drive

Slightly scaled 1440 resolution screen capture from Hero3

You've seen them on everyone doing everything, but what kind of quality do you get from such a small package? The GoPro Hero 3 (not even the Hero3+) is one amazing piece of camera equipment.  I have had it for a while, but this will be my first winter season with the camera, and winter is what I bought it for.
So with the awesome opening day at Big White Ski Resort in the Okanagan, I caught a few clips with the camera that I will share with you now.

Looking Back at Autumn

Colored leaves -Okanagan Style

Picture Of The Day : Sport Sequence

Morgan on a Flat Light Day in the Forest
This is a sport sequence I captured in January this year. The multiple frames you see came from shooting at about 7fps.  We get so much flat light at Big White, it often drives you into the trees - sounds dangerous in low visibility? Actually trees give you depth perception so that you can begin to see the changes in terrain before you, that you wouldn't normally see in low visibility, flat light, on bare slopes.  And fortunately that's how you stumble upon nice drops like this one.

Big Tub Lighthouse, Tobermory
The first picture of the day for this week is another one from my trip to Ontario this fall, but out of the city this time. We're going way out of the city to Tobermory, along the Bruce Peninsula nearly to the end, extending partway into Georgian Bay.  This is the Big Tub Lighthouse in Tobermory backlit by the afternoon sun.

A Time and Place for High ISO

EXPOSURE : ISO 2500 f/4 @ 1/15s
Sometimes you might look at a camera's latest feature and say, well that's silly, I don't need that.  There is a reason you're saying this - you've never had it before, so you haven't come to rely on it, which of course, you will be left feeling like you don't need it.

Instead, think of it as what can I do with this feature? What can you do that you couldn't do before. Take for instance the images below. A use for a little-used feature, to capture a scene I have never seen before, in a way that would only be possible thanks to extremely high ISO capabilities.

Can I Have Your Attention Please?

Hey there,

The Calendars Have Arrived for 2014!

2014 Kelowna Calendars - A fresh Design by Chris Gardiner Photography
Decided to get on it a little earlier this year than I did last.  They've been online for a few weeks now available on demand, and I got my shipment of 50+ of two different designs. I'm talking about the 2014 Calendars I designed!   The same original collection I put together last year is available for the new year with the same great scenes across Canada, and I made another, this one focused on Kelowna.

You can buy them online for about $25 USD plus shipping for either design, I'll include the links at the end of this post.  If you have the distinct luxury of living in our area or able to travel to Kelowna, you can also deal directly with us, and pay the same great price, but save the shipping fees! That's right, get a copy from myself or Steph for the same price it is online at only $25! scratch that - we decided to make it an even better deal in person and are making them only $20 each! But hurry up because supplies wont last!! (edited November 9, 2013)

Just a few days ago, I put together the first video portfolio. I've had the idea on the drawing board for ages, and decide finally to just go for it.  This one is focused on attracting potential clients to my real estate photography related services.

They will serve many purposes, from living online where I can direct prospective clients to from far away, as well as on an iPad or iPhone travelling with me in addition to the paper portfolio for Real Estate Photography I had in 2012 and this year until now.

The Canon G15 : Review

iPod Photo from @cgardinerphoto instagram
If you have been around my Facebook page over the last little while you may have noticed a piece of news which I found particularly exciting; that is the new Canon Powershot G15 camera I purchased in March.

It's feature loaded in both still and video recording modes.  A few of my favourite features are manual control of video focus and exposure, RAW still photo capture at twelve megapixels at ISOs as low as 80 and high into the 1000s. One feature that wasn't advertised but was awesome to find is the high speed capture at 120 and 240fps in low resolution video shooting modes.

A trip to "the Island"

A beautiful walkway in Cathedral Grove

That's what we call it in this part of the country anyways. That is the beautiful Vancouver Island in British Columbia. After as many years as I have spent out west, I only just made my first trip to The Island in August 2013.  That's fine - it was worth the wait.

Ontario in the Fall : Redux 2013

Last fall in Ontario netted me some of what we like to call 'banger photos' or the ones we really really like. So it's no surprise I'll be back again this fall to see some more of the same, and hopefully a lot of what I missed the last time!

The fall is such a short window in so many places, it can be hard to hit it right in more than one location from a photographer's point of view.

Shark in a Fishbowl

Where it will all happen.

It's not a new concept ; a fish, no matter how big it is destined to be, will remain the size of the container it lives in, without outgrowing it. Goldfish in small bowls stay small, goldfish in big bowls get bigger.
That's all well and good, but no one comes here for zoology lessons. How it relates to me is;  I feel like I have a great white's appetite for work, but up until just recently, was stuck in a tiny little gold fish sized bowl of an office.

Up until recently.
